Salvia officinalis - common sage Some might say 'it's just cooking sage' etc but it's an effective therapeutic A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial involving 30 healthy volunteers found that eating 600mg of dried sage leaf in pill form led to "reduced anxiety, increased alertness, calmness and contentedness". There was "improved mood and cognitive performance following the administration of single doses to healthy young participants." [1] It is said by one to be a 'teacher plant for grounding and presence': "I believe there’s something in all of the Salvias that help us let go of the past and be completely present. This is a specific kind of grounding that connects us to our real selves, calming without distancing ourselves from the issues at hand, simply soothing us enough to look life in the face. I think of the Salvias as mother plants, protective and nurturing while teaching us how to take care of ourselves." - Kiva Rose More on the pharmacology here Like essential oils? Try a drop of Spanish Sage In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, balanced, crossover study, mood was consistently enhanced, with increases in self-rated 'alertness', 'calmness' and 'contentedness' following the 50-microl dose and elevated 'calmness' following 25 microl of oral essential oils from Salvia. "These results represent further evidence that Salvia is capable of acute modulation of mood and cognition in healthy young adults. The data also suggest that previous reports of memory enhancement by Salvia may be due to more efficient retrieval of target material." [2]
